UPF-7 Battery Box Modifications

If you are lucky enough to have a UPF-7 battery box as was originally installed, it is possible to convert it to a really nice installation without a whole lot of trouble. Fortunately the length and width of the original box is very close to the dimensions needed to fit a modern day 35 amp battery. The Gill 35 seems to be the closest fit especially the center distance between the battery posts is just right to fit the metal tulip connectors in the top of the old box.

Basically what is needed is a substantial platform to position the new battery about 4 inches higher in the box. With 3/4" diameter x 7/8" high aluminum extensions threaded to fit the new battery posts, the battery plugs in nicely, retaining the overall dimensions, functions and appearance of the original set up.

Alternately, it is also possible to cut down the old box making it about 4" shorter, raise the mounting brackets and accomplish the same objective if original looks are of no concern. In either case, the battery can be serviced through the hinged access door in the belly pan directly under the battery box. Since the old box is fabricated and welded of soft aluminum, it is surprising how much damage can be easily repaired. It is recommended that the riveted parts be removed to check corrosion and also to allow reinforcement patches to be added as needed. Purging of the box can be accomplished by using the original 3/8" O.D. tubing exiting the top of the box then aft and down through the belly pan and scarfed into the air flow. Exit vents can be plumbed in or can simply be drilled holes in the sides of the case. The bottom drain tube can be plugged to prevent acid streaking of the belly and should be checked periodically. The interior surfaces should be zinc chromated and coated with acid proof paint.  Also, the exterior looks very professional if finished with black wrinkle enamel which tends to hide most surface irregularities. More information including factory drawings are available for the original components from the AWC.
