Wind In My Face
Experience the amazing adventures of Gladys (Dawson) Buroker, northwest aviation pioneer. She is the mother of American WACO Club member, Linda Buroker-Melhoff of Newberg, Oregon. Gladys soloed in a WACO 10 in 1932, and rode a Harley Davidson across country in 1938 with her friend, Madelyn. Her career of aviation instruction spanned over 50 years and included military instruction during WWII, as well as float planes, gliders and hot air balloons. Gladys has been honored by the National Aeronautic Association in Washington, DC, been inducted into the Idaho Aviation Hall of Fame, and chosen as a Pathfinder by the Boeing Museum of Flight. ** Note from Ruthie Coulson: At this year’s fundraising auction at the AWC Fly-In, I bought the book Wind In My Face donated by Linda Buroker-Melhoff. It is an excellent, interesting must read book by a “Lady Aviator” who had a love and desire to fly, having soloed at age 18 in an OX-5 powered Waco 10 in 1932 – after just five hours of tutoring! Many of you purchased I’ll Fly Away by member Jack Race. If you did not you missed a great book about a “Gentleman Aviator” who fulfilled a lifetime in aviation and still owns his UPF-7. This, too, is a must read. You can find out how to order your copy by looking under WHERE TO FIND IT in this website. Phil and I are pleased to have these autographed books in our aviation library collection.**
Beyond the Clouds
Legendary aviation artist Walter "Matt" Jefferied (1921-2003) is best known for his work as art director of the original Star Trek television series-and for designing the most widely recognized spacecraft of all time, the U.S.S. Enterprise. In his lifetime, Jefferies worked on the set and art designs for over fifteen movies and TV series, including Little House on the Prairie, Dallas, Father Murphy, Ben Casey, and Love American Style. He also produced many aircraft paintings and technical designs. His paintings have been exhibited in museums all over the world. This beautiful, full-color biography goes beyond Jefferies' life as an artist. Jefferies was a charming and genteel Southerner whose eventful childhood and love of aviation propelled him to become a high-flying visionary. After his stint in the military, he still found time to take to the skies, flying his vintage WACO YOC cabin biplane throughout the rest of his life. Illustrated with images of his striking paintings Jefferies' story is enriched with a historical backdrop, personal anecdotes, and plenty of information on Star Trek, aviation, and set design. The unique fusion of art and aircraft is revealed through pages that trace the life and time of the aviation expert who helped shape the face of science fiction.
