I have owned Waco #14027 for a long, long time. I purchased it in
1969 from Robert Lee in DeLand, FL. Total time on the airframe
was 1121 hours. I am the 12th person to own this airplane.
Westfall Airways of Milwaukee, WI purchased it new in 1934.
It was sold in July, 1941 to Ell Torrance in Bismarck, ND, where
it resided until May, 1942. On July 27, 1941, the airplane was
wrecked with damage on the right and lower wings, wheel pants, left
aileron, and the prop had to be re-tipped.
In May of 1942 the aircraft was sold to Elkings
Flying Service in West Virginia. While there it did military
courier service until January 28, 1943, when it was sold to W.W.
Martin. Mr. Martin overhauled the engine and changed this Waco
from a YKC to a ZKC, which was completed on August 6, 1944.
During the repair, the Waco was sold on March 7, 1944, to M.B.
Tuxhorn, Commercial Airport, Bartlesville, OK, and remained there until
April 20, 1945, when C.E. Sheppard and C.K. Beckwith of Larned, KS
purchased it. It remained there until September , 1948.
In September of 1948, Richard Christman, Wichita,
KS, purchased the aircraft and it was flown 31 hours when it was again
sold in December 1948, to W.E. Sellars of Emporia,
KS. Sellars added another 94 hours of flying time until October
of 1950.
Merle W. Warner purchased the airplane in December,
1950, and held it until 1955, when it was sold to Robert M. Lee and
John G. Beardon of DeLand, FL. According to the paperwork the
airplane flew three hours in 1956.
I purchased the aircraft project in 1969 and many
long years later this project is finally coming together and hopefully,
with a little luck, good health, and a lot of work, will fly again in
the near future.
